Kiss Me, Kate at the Old Globe

Since its premiere in 1948, Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate has been a favorite for many, winning the very first Tony Award presented for Best Musical. The musical is a a performance within a performance. Featuring William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, the storyline follows Fred Graham, the producer, director, and star of The Taming of the Shrew and his co-star and ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi. The two actors constantly bicker with each other, despite their obvious, never ceasing love for each other. As they virulently attack each other, both offstage and onstage, Fred Graham leads a romance with Lois Lane, whom he gives a role, causing Lilli Vanessi to smother herself in her own jealousy. Everything goes aflame when Fred Graham sends Lois Lane flowers Lilli Vanessi had when she married him. Composer of the Month: Richard Wagner

Wilhelm Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was born in Leipzig, Germany. He became one of the most influential and controversial composers of the world. Composers influenced by Wagner include Dvorak, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Bruckner and Richard Strauss. Richard Wagner also wrote the famous 18-hour Ring Cycle (Der Ring des Nibelungen), based on the events in the lives of characters in Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied. Adolf Hitler was a great fan of Richard Wagner due to several of his anti-semitic writings.

Wagner, in addition to inspiring many talented composers, was in turn inspired by the incomparable Ludvig Van Beethoven, in particular by his Ninth Symphony. Richard Wagner married singer and actress Minna Planer, in 1836, and moved to K√∂nigsberg with her. In K√∂nigsberg, Wagner produced his "total work of art" Das Liebesverbot, for which he wrote both music and lyrics.
